Hydrogen is indispensable for the climate-neutral transformation of industry: as an energy source, an energy storage medium and a basic material for the chemical industry. This is because hydrogen enables decarbonization even in places where renewable energy cannot be used. With our “Hydrogen Roadmap NRW” we are advancing the development of a hydrogen economy in the State with a view to making North Rhine-Westphalia the number one location for hydrogen.
State of North Rhine-Westphalia
North Rhine-Westphalia is superbly positioned for building a hydrogen economy – in terms of infrastructure, customers, networks and research facilities. The State has the potential to become the central hub for Germany’s hydrogen supply. Moreover, its geographic location, with access to production facilities and import sources on the North Sea coast and in the Netherlands, allows it to create added value for the regions in south-western Germany. The Ruhr area in particular offers ideal conditions for the large-scale transformation of industry towards zero emissions, enabling it to lead the way as a model region for ramping up the hydrogen economy, thereby accelerating transformation throughout North Rhine-Westphalia.
